Coalition Accuses Trump Administration of Sabotaging Pretti Investigation
Over 50 advocacy groups have accused the Trump administration of obstructing the investigation into the death of Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse fatally shot by federal immigration agents last month, citing the FBI's refusal to share critical evidence with Minnesota state authorities as proof of a broader cover-up.
The Not Above the Law Coalition, which includes the ACLU and Public Citizen, argues that the administration is shielding federal officers from accountability by breaking with established protocols for inter-agency cooperation. The Hennepin County medical examiner has officially ruled Pretti's death a homicide, yet federal officials continue to withhold documentation from local investigators.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty confirmed her office is proceeding without federal assistance, gathering witness testimony and evidence independently. While the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continues its probe into the shooting, local officials maintain they retain the authority to bring criminal charges against federal personnel if the evidence warrants it. The coalition warns that the current lack of transparency sets a dangerous precedent, effectively granting federal agents immunity from state-level oversight.
